Topic Categories

Topic categories describe the subject domains to which datasets are related.

The ISO standard 19115 defines a taxonomy of topic categories to classify and describe the subject matter of geospatial datasets. These categories ensure consistency and interoperability when organizing and sharing geospatial metadata across systems and organizations.

Another data taxonomy, known as data themes, is imposed by the European Union.

Topic Categories in Dateno​

A dataset can take one or more topic categories or have no data category at all.

The search engine assigns topic categories to datasets based on declarations made by the dataset publisher.

If a subset of datasets is selected, either by entering a full-text query or by choosing options in other facets, the Topic Category facet displays only the topic categories related to the selected datasets.

  • Rely on topic categories when searching for datasets published by organizations that are supposed to comply with ISO standards.
